Designers, models, stylists, fashion victims, and people in the nightlife scene gathered last Wednesday to celebrate the more rebellious side of fashion at Lane Crawford’s ‘New Generation’ event. Lane Crawford is one of three major upscale chains that specialize in cutting-edge fashion. Lane Crawford’s sprawling contemporary stores anchor three of Hong Kong’s most popular shopping centers – IFC2, Pacific Place, and Times Square.

The event provided a networking opportunity for stylists and fashion insiders, in addition to a good excuse to have some fun. Lane Crawford has recently repositioned itself as more of a trend-setting upscale retailer, rather than its previous image that resembled a department store. The ‘New Generation’ event fits with its new emphasis on being a leader in “fashion forward”.

Particularly the newest branch in the IFC mall, and the newly renovated Pacific Place location make a solid effort to integrate fashion-as-art as a main ingredient in their image.

The “New Generation” event featured walls covered with images and biographies of a wide range of designers. Though the designers in focus are as disparate as can be, their point is that they are united in their individualism.

The venue for the night, WORKS, provided an excellent, gritty location to showcase individual style. Works is located on the second floor of a building just above the Lan Kwai Fong nightlife area on Wyndham Street. Even with the additional decorations, Works had a sort of dingy, illicit charm.

This being a fashion event, photographers were on hand with Polaroids, snapping photos of well-dressed guests and pinning them against the wall.

The main d.j. for the night was D.J. Headman from Zürich who got people moving with a blend of contemporary dance music of the Electro-Punk variety. This kind of music has been fashionable for around three years already and the tightly packed crowd was rockin’ later in the night. D.J. Headman is known as one the early champions of the Electro-Punk genre.
