Local graffiti artists Xeme and Sinic took the colorful signs of Hong Kong’s red-light district as inspiration for their new exhibition titled Portland Street, which opens tonight at 7pm at the Artist Residence Gallery in Sai Ying Pun.
The two are well known in the local scene for pieces that feature intricate lettering and dazzling use of color.
Although there have been a rash of bad graffiti exhibitions over the last few years, mostly from foreign transplants whose work is as unoriginal as it is uninspiring, Portland Street by Xeme and Sinic looks to be worth attending. The fact that the exhibition has an interesting, local subject, makes it stand out.
The Artist Residence gallery is just up the street and around the corner from the Above Second Gallery, also in Sai Ying Pun.

where in HK is that wall of fame in the vid?? Been looking out for good pieces in HK for 5 years but only seen a few isolated spots….
I wish I knew where these spots were too. I’m not an artist, I just like looking at the pieces. The only spot I’m familiar with is by the Mongkok KCR station. As you walk up the hill, there’s a canal alongside the path with some really great works.
