While you don’t need any special equipment before you hit Hong Kong’s hiking trails, in summertime it helps to have clothing made of quick-dry fabrics. Regular cotton shirts by contrast, will get damp and become uncomfortable on longer hikes.
In Hong Kong you don’t need to spend much to get weather-appropriate clothing.
Over the last three years, multiple outlet stores have sprung up in Prince Edward and Sham Shui Po that sell outdoor clothing at big discounts.
The shops offer a full line of hiking clothing, from shirts, shorts, pants, and socks, to hats, light jackets and shoes.
Many of these stores stock a good variety of sizes and styles at one-third the price of comparable garments elsewhere. Dry-fit type shirts start from around $50 HKD, while fashionable, foldable windbreakers go for less than $200 HKD. Specialized hiking pants that can be converted into shorts are a little over $100 HKD.
There are two clusters of these stores, one along Tai Po Road in Prince Edward, and the other on Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po, close to Ap Liu Street. (Wanchai’s sample stores also provide some hiking gear, although they don’t offer quite as extensive a selection.)
Both groups of shops are within easy walking distance of the MTR.

Take Exit A of the Prince Edward MTR station, and walk up Nathan Road about three blocks, crossing Boundary Street to get to 12 Tai Po Road. From the Power Sports store, continue up the street and you will find other shops just a few doors away.

Take a left from Exit A2 of the Sham Shui Po MTR station and walk down Ap Liu Street to get to Nam Cheong Street. Next, make a left onto Nam Cheong Street and will find several shops as you walk towards Cheung Sha Wan Road.
