Sometimes the simplest things are the best. Forget Hong Kong’s trend towards fancy fusion food and enjoy a delicious tofu fa for just $10 HKD!
Many dessert places have tofu fa on their menus, but they seldom get it right.
Though it looks quite plain and easy to make, a great tofu fa requires a balance of multiple factors that include freshness, texture (smoothness,) temperature and taste.
Usually the best places specialize in the simple variety. Skip the more exotic flavors, and go for the original.
The best thing about tofu fa is that it hits the spot either in summer as a cold delicacy, or in winter when served hot.
You can sweeten it to your liking, and there are a range of sweeteners to add, such as ginger sugar.
Classic tofu fa in Causeway Bay!
Even as astronomical rents force traditional Hong Kong restaurants and snack shops to close, you can still find traditional style tofu fa in Causeway Bay.
In fact, the Yan Wo Dou Bun Chong (人和è³å“å» ) restaurant serves nothing but tofu dishes.
Here, everything on the menu is $18 HKD or less. If you’re up for a snack, the simple fried noodles with bean sprouts are delicious and a steal at $15 HKD.
There are multiple varieties of steamed or fried tofu as well, some with soy sauce, and others with fish meat.
The restaurant’s menu isn’t complicated, with only a small number of choices listed clearly in both Chinese and English. There are menus located on the wall, or often they will hand you a menu.
As inexpensive local food is quickly disappearing, it’s great to have these two branches of Yan Wo Dou Bun Chong still surviving in Causeway Bay.
Enjoy and help keep Hong Kong snacks alive!
