The action has been picking up at XXX lately with a string of new nights centered around interesting genres of music. This weekend continues the trend with the debut of Red Corvette, a night dedicated to celebrating all things 80’s.
Connoisseurs of Pop will be able to tell you that the 80’s featured some of the best music of the century.
Genres that would shape the world made big steps in the 80’s. Hip Hop, which started in the 70’s, gained momentum and began to flourish and expand. New Wave brought new, experimental sounds to mainstream music, and MTV pioneered music videos, which would shape the industry for the next two decades.
Pop music in the 80’s contained influences from the many smaller genres competing for listeners at the time. In general, music was much more closely tied to a person’s identity back then. You could often tell what type of music a person listened to just by the way they dressed.
Also, with no Internet, people actually went to record stores to buy music, and listened to the radio to discover new songs. Likewise, distribution of music was physically limited, and in order to get the best music, you often had to be located in a major city.
The title of the night, “Red Corvette” is a reference to a Prince song, “Little Red Corvette” from 1983.
On Friday night you can expect a wide assortment of beats from a diverse group of DJs. The current lineup includes: Visa, The Living Discoheads, Bling, Enso, and CPB.
